June – National Smile Month
Take Your Dog to Work Day (June 21)
The U.S. Senate confirmed by an 85-9 voice vote on June 6, Heath Tarbert as incoming chairman of the CFTC, replacing current chairman Chris Giancarlo. Tarbert is a member of the Financial Stability Board, the international body established after the financial crisis to monitor global markets. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas prior to serving as Assistant Secretary for International Markets in the current administration. At 42 years old, he is one of the youngest chairman to ever serve.
NIBA has a good relationship with the office of the chairman, built through years of open, honest and consistent communications with the regulatory body, and we will work to see it continues. We accomplish that with meetings with the entire Commission and staff throughout the year, and by submitting comment/opinion letters to the Commission and its committees whenever rules are being discussed which affect the business and livelihood of NIBA members.
NFA has its current board update video posted on its website. NFA Vice-President Maureen Downs and President Tom Sexton discuss association goals and budgets for the coming year.
On June 20, Managed Funds Association (MFA) holds its annual Chicago meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel. This one-day event focus on regulation and innovation in the managed funds portion of the industry. Details and registration forms are found on their website.
Also on June 20, FIA will hold a webinar to discuss the mechanics of using decentralized platforms and how they fit into the current regulatory framework. Register for the webinar here.
Please register now for the Annual NIBA/DePaul University Symposium — this is always a standing room-only event. We’re excited to have Dan Roth, former CEO of the NFA for an armchair chat with Matt Kluchenek from Mayer Brown. The afternoon also includes an update on the state of managed funds and our very popular session – Issue Briefings; three 15-minute talks focused on the CME micro contracts, new regulation at the NFA and marketing. The July 11 symposium concludes with cocktails on the outdoor terrace at DePaul’s downtown campus.
See you July 11 at DePaul!
